![]() Sneaky Dairy is what I call dairy ingredients that sneak their way into a product that you would never expect. I previously made a list of surprising foods that ARE dairy free, so now it’s time to reverse it (cue Missy Elliot music). There are some very tricky, sneaky, and misleading foods out there that contain dairy. Here are some that I’ve found…sadly from personal experience. 1. Cool Ranch Doritos![]() This one is a bit specific, but only because it hurt me the most. I love Cool Ranch Doritos, but sadly it contains lactose, whey, skim milk, cheddar cheese, buttermilk, and sodium caseinate (a milk derivative) …so, that’s a big nope. There are lots of chip flavors that contain milk, like the obvious cheddar and sour cream and onion, so just make sure to check the ingredients list before popping open your favorite bag of half air. 2. Party Dips
3. Seasoned Bread Crumbs![]() This was a strange one and I found it out when I was making dinner one night. Just for fun, because my idea of fun has apparently turned into seeing if I’ll get diarrhea or not, I decided to turn the container over and see the lovely label “contains milk”. There was whey, nonfat dry milk, and cheese in the ingredients. At first, I thought it was just because of the flavoring, but I looked at the ingredients of some plain breadcrumbs and still saw dairy. Instead, you can make your own breadcrumbs, try to find a dairy free brand, or crush some dairy free chips/crackers! 4. Ranch Dressing I know, it’s a tragedy. It contains both buttermilk and milk, so say goodbye to dunking your tots in sweet, sweet, ranch. After doing some research, I found out that even some other dressings (like my other favorite Honey Mustard) contain dairy products. And anything that has the word “creamy” in the title, just assume that there’s dairy. I only know of one company that makes dairy free ranch dressing (Daiya) and I’ve tried it before. It comes close, but if you’ve had actual ranch dressing before and then try this one, you will know the difference. But, I use the Daiya blue cheese dressing whenever I have chicken wings and it TASTES. SO. GOOD. If you’re really hankering for ranch, there are some great sounding recipes you can find with just a quick google search. Maybe I’ll try one out! 5. Seasoning Packets![]() This kind of goes along with the whole ranch thing. I was trying to make a dairy free vegetable dip for myself and bought the ranch seasoning packet with some dairy free sour cream. I was going to mix the two for an easy-peasy recipe… and then I actually looked at the ingredients for the seasoning packet. Again… make sure to read your labels. It contains buttermilk, which seems to be a popular ingredient. BUT WITH SOME SUPER SLEUTHING I found a brand that makes a dairy free ranch dressing mix! I haven’t tried it, but you better believe I will! It’s from a company called The Spice Hunter and apparently, they sell it at Target! 6. Restaurant Grilled Chicken![]() I know it sounds strange, but it’s very much true. I’m going to make a post about how to safely eat at a restaurant, but until then I’ll tell you about this. While you may think you’re doing the safe thing by ordering a simple piece of grilled chicken, PSYCH! You’re not. A lot of times, restaurants will marinate their chicken and other food products in buttermilk before cooking them, whether it be fried, baked, or grilled. The safest bet it to check their online website for an allergen menu. Again, I’ll make a post going more in depth later. 7. RumChata![]() I almost had a terrible accident at a party because of RumChata… thank God my sister was there to stop me from drinking it. RumChata is literally a cream liqueur…so yeah, it’s a no-no. Most people wouldn’t think twice about dairy being in a drink when ordering one, except for the obvious milkshake situation. But there are a lot of drinks that add cream or some sort of dairy product for a rich flavor and a lot of times whipped cream is added to the top. So, just make sure you know what you’re ordering. 8. Bread![]() Depending on what type of bread you are buying, there could be added dairy like cheese, butter, or milk. From the research I did, I think most commercially sold bread is dairy free (again just read the labels, its not that hard), but it’s when you start getting into specialty breads that things get a little fuzzy. 9. Protein Powder I mean, to some this might come as a surprise, but to me it wasn’t. There is literally a brand of protein powder called “Whey”, which is a milk protein. There are, however, plenty of dairy free protein powders that are plant based and use plant ingredients like pea protein. 10. "Dairy Free" Coffee Creamer![]() This one really ruffled my feathers! One morning, I was going to make a cup of coffee and saw I had no more almond milk. I thought I was just going to skip my morning cup because I cannot drink black coffee (I’ve tried, it makes me gag. I know, I’m a baby) when I saw we had some powdered coffee creamer. I looked at the container and saw that it said dairy free! Sweet! I poured some into my coffee and took a sip. Now, I was dumb and took a sip before I read the ingredients. Come to find out, the ingredients list Sodium Caseinate which is a milk derivative! It even says in parentheses milk derivative!! What the heck? Now, luckily my intolerance isn’t that strong where something like this would have a dangerous effect on me, but for someone that goes into anaphylactic shock from their allergies could potentially be harmed! Personally, I don’t think any product should be labeled or called dairy free if there any traces of milk in them, derivatives and all. I’m calling you out Coffee Mate…fix your labels. That's a wrap! There you go, a little list of some surprising things I found dairy to be in. Also, I want to add that there can be dairy in a lot of beauty products as well. So, even though you may not be ingesting these beauty products, they are still going on your skin topically and could cause a skin reaction. Personally, I don’t get affected by these beauty products, I have a hand cream that has milk in it, but someone with a more severe case may be.
It’s always best to be informed about ingredients so you can make the decision for yourself whether you want to consume/use the product. I also made a list of surprising dairy free foods! If you're interested in reading that, click here! Hope this helped!
