![]() Sneaky Dairy is what I call dairy ingredients that sneak their way into a product that you would never expect. I previously made a list of surprising foods that ARE dairy free, so now it’s time to reverse it (cue Missy Elliot music). There are some very tricky, sneaky, and misleading foods out there that contain dairy. Here are some that I’ve found…sadly from personal experience.

When it comes to dairy free eating, there are a lot of things to remember. I made the mistake one time and forgot that butter is a part of dairy…like I said, I made that mistake ONE time only. After that, I wouldn’t forget again. As always, like I say in almost every post, READ THE LABELS! Regardless of whether you assume something wouldn’t have dairy or even if it’s labeled ‘dairy free’, take the time to flip the box over and read the ingredients. But, I’m here to help give a quick look into some of the foods that actually are dairy free that you wouldn’t expect to be! I did find a great list on the Food Network of surprising dairy free foods that I’ll post here. My list overlaps some, but I tried to look for other surprising foods that I didn’t even know were dairy free!
Yeah... I know. It doesn’t sound like something you would want to eat. For a while, I thought it was something perverted, but I promise it’s not! “Nutritional yeast is a species of yeast known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae” (source). While it may have a similar starting point as brewer’s yeast (yeast that ends up making beer) and baker’s yeast (yeast that is baked into breads and other tasty treats), the difference between them is its growth and cultivation process.
![]() For me, my rule of thumb when it comes to ingredient lists on food is that less is more. The less amount of ingredients there are listed on the package, the better! Do I want the apple chips where apples are listed third and I have to guess if the 'x' is silent in some of the other ingredients? Or do I want the apple chips that literally are made from apples, cinnamon, and sugar? I always try to keep that in mind when browsing the isles, but sometimes the luxury of a short ingredient list isn't available. So, I've taken it upon myself to write down every ingredient that I've come across on my dairy-free products that made me question if I even wanted to eat the product or not. I know, I know it sounds like a lot. But this is the exact confusion I went through when trying to pinpoint my problems. Now, I want to make this perfectly clear, I am NOT a doctor. I have not studied this in school and I am in NO WAY a professional. These things are just what I found out on my own. I've had to do a lot of reading and came up with my own conclusions. I'll explain later why I never went to the doctor. The first thing I thought of was that I was Lactose Intolerant. I had heard of it before and just assumed that was my problem. I did a little research and this is what I found.
